What factors will influence gastroscopy examination fees?

The cost of gastroscopy examination is primarily influenced by the following factors:

Complexity of the examination procedure

Generally, the more complex the examination, the higher the cost. If special procedures such as polyp removal or biopsy are required, the price tends to be higher.

Medication use

Depending on the situation, doctors may administer sedatives and pain medications to the patient undergoing the examination. Different anesthesia methods, such as monitored anesthesia, may also be used, which can affect the cost.

Hospital facilities

The qualifications of the doctors, the level of advanced equipment in the operating room, and the comfort of the environment can all impact the fees charged by each hospital.

Which types of insurance can cover gastroscopy?

If a gastroscopy examination is conducted based on a written recommendation from a primary care doctor, the eligible outpatient consultation fees, medication costs, and examination fees are covered under Bowtie Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme. For example, the following table provides coverage limits for various gastroscopy examination items under Bowtie Voluntary Health Insurance (Standard/Flexible) and Bowtie Pink Voluntary Health Insurance for reference:

  • *The coverage limits mentioned only include surgeon fees. Voluntary Health Insurance also provides coverage for other procedures, such as specialist fees, room rental, anesthesiologist fees, operating room fees, miscellaneous fees, etc. The coverage limits for each item will depend on the complexity of the examination, and the Voluntary Health Insurance Surgical Schedule has classified procedures based on complexity (from small to complex).
  • #Bowtie Pink Voluntary Health Insurance series provides full reimbursement for eligible medical expenses related to diagnoses, hospitalization, surgeries, and specified non-surgical cancer treatments, excluding the United States, subject to annual and lifetime coverage limits. The compensation amounts may be adjusted for claims involving hospitals in Mainland China outside the designated hospital list, high-end hospitals within the designated hospital list in Mainland China, rooms exceeding the specified level, or pre-existing conditions before enrollment.
  • NoteThe company reserves the right to request proof of the written recommendation, such as referral letters or statements provided by the primary care doctor or registered doctor on the claim application form.

  1. Completed and signed inpatient compensation claim form by the doctor.
  2. Original hospital receipt.
  3. All pathology reports.

Private hospitals usually have different claim forms for various insurance companies. As long as you inform the doctor clearly about the medical insurance you have purchased, they will have experience in filling out the forms. It is recommended to prepare a summary of your insurance coverage for the doctor’s reference.

How long does it take to receive compensation after applying?

The time required for each claim varies depending on the complexity of the case. Approximately 80%# of cases are processed within 10 working days, and the compensation amount is transferred to the claimant’s designated bank account within 3 working days after successful approval.

FAQ

How long does it typically take to schedule a government-funded gastroscopy?

Bowtie contacted the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (2595 6111) to inquire about the waiting time for a government-funded gastroscopy. The response received was that it can take 1-2 years or even longer. However, this number should be taken as a reference only, as the specific time may vary depending on the patient’s condition. It is recommended to contact the hospital directly for more information.

Is hospitalization required for a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy examinations can be performed in a hospital’s day center, allowing patients to be discharged on the same day without an overnight stay. However, there is also an option for a two-day, one-night hospital stay. The decision depends on the patient’s condition, and it is advisable to consult with the doctor for more details.
