Does VHIS cover cancer diagnosis and treatments? Tips to ensure sufficient protection
The VHIS Scheme offers comprehensive coverage, encompassing medical expenses across three key stages: (1) diagnostic investigations, (2) cancer treatment, and (3) post-treatment rehabilitation.
Coverage for Cancer Diagnosis
Cancer is classified as a critical illness, making early diagnosis particularly crucial. Physicians typically recommend patients undergo a series of laboratory tests and imaging scans, such as Computed Tomography (CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans, to assist in determining whether cancer is present.
For the aforementioned specified diagnostic imaging tests, VHIS provides coverage. Taking Bowtie as an example, the coverage amounts for different VHIS plans are as follows:
| Flexi Plan (Standard ) | Flexi Plan (Plus ) | Bowtie Pink VHIS | |
| Annual coverage | $26,000 ^ | $40,000 ^ | Full compensation * |
- ^ Subject to 30% co-insurance
- *Full reimbursement refers to coverage without sub-limits and applies only to specified covered items. Claims are subject to the excess (where applicable), annual coverage limits, lifetime coverage limits, and other restrictions including reasonable and customary charges, pre-existing conditions, the list of designated hospitals in Chinese Mainland, and provisions regarding medical treatment in the United States. For detailed product terms and conditions, product risks, and exclusions, please refer to the relevant product website and policy documents.
Coverage for Surgical Treatment of Cancer
Should the insured person be diagnosed with cancer, surgical intervention may be required to remove cancerous tissue and prevent further deterioration.
The VHIS Scheme categorises relevant surgeries as ‘Minor’, ‘Moderate’, ‘Major’ and ‘Complex’, with detailed coverage amounts as follows:

Coverage for Non-Surgical Cancer Treatment
Beyond surgical interventions, physicians may also arrange non-surgical treatments for patients. Non-surgical cancer treatments specified under the VHI scheme include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. Coverage limits for Bowtie’s various plans are as follows:
| Flexi Plan (Standard ) | Flexi Plan (Plus ) | Bowtie Pink VHIS | |

Cancer treatment is a protracted battle. After completing the entire course of treatment, patients require ongoing physical examinations, condition monitoring, and other rehabilitation therapies to prevent recurrence.
The coverage scope of VHIS generally includes outpatient care before and after discharge, as well as before and after day surgery. Bowtie’s VHIS Flexi Plan further provides coverage for home nursing fees and rehabilitation treatment after discharge, allowing the insured to recuperate with peace of mind.

How to Select VHIS with Sufficient Cancer Coverage?
- If you already have company medical insurance/personal medical insurance but find the coverage insufficient, you can directly purchase Bowtie Pink to enhance your cancer protection. This plan provides full reimbursement* for any hospital, any surgery, and any treatment, including cancer treatment!
- If you currently hold no medical insurance, you may first purchase a Standard plan (such as Bowtie Flexi Plan). However, Standard plans impose sub-limits on specific benefits, which may prove insufficient for cancer treatment. Therefore, the insured may subsequently add Bowtie Cancer Protection to elevate cancer coverage to $3 million.
