Family Medical Insurance in Hong Kong for Children and Parents
Product documents checked 21 October 2026
Start by listing each person's existing benefits, health information, preferred care and affordable out-of-pocket amount. Then add the household cost. Do not assume the same plan or deductible suits everyone.
Who can be insured
Bowtie's published insured-person entry range is 15 days to age 80. Both policyholder and insured person must meet the current identity, residence and application-location requirements. [S19] [S21]
One family member can hold a policy for another eligible person, but insurance eligibility and tax eligibility are separate checks. Calling someone a partner or dependant does not by itself make them a specified relative for tax purposes.
Applying for a baby
Wait until the baby meets the product's entry requirements, obtain the required identity documents and complete the health declaration using the findings and follow-up information requested.
Disclose relevant newborn checks, consultations and medical advice. Buying early does not remove a condition already known at the application, nor does it guarantee standard underwriting terms.
A policy for a baby also does not remove the congenital-condition exclusion. VHIS addresses congenital conditions that manifest or are diagnosed from age eight, subject to the relevant terms. A condition manifested or diagnosed before eight is not made newly eligible merely by reaching that birthday. [S1] [S24]
Waiting periods differ between plans
For qualifying unknown pre-existing conditions, Bowtie Standard has no cover in the first policy year, 25% reimbursement in the second, 50% in the third and full coverage from the fourth within its terms.
Bowtie Flexi and Pink use no cover during the first 90 days, with full coverage from day 91 within their terms. Applying the 90-day statement to Standard would give a family the wrong expectation. [S1] [S4] [S10]
These provisions do not override personal exclusions or make every post-purchase diagnosis an unknown condition.
A family budget using actual published rates
This example uses five hypothetical family members and the actual Standard non-smoker monthly rates effective 29 December 2025, checked on 21 October 2026. It assumes standard underwriting terms. Figures exclude levy, promotions and loadings.
| Person | Age and profile | Monthly premium | Twelve monthly payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent 1 | Male, 38 | HK$177 | HK$2,124 |
| Parent 2 | Female, 37 | HK$218 | HK$2,616 |
| Child 1 | Boy, 3 | HK$132 | HK$1,584 |
| Child 2 | Girl, 8 | HK$97 | HK$1,164 |
| Grandparent | Male, 68 | HK$712 | HK$8,544 |
| Total | All five people | HK$1,336 | HK$16,032 |
These are annualised monthly payments, not a separate annual-payment quotation or guaranteed future bill. They compare a real product structure: Standard does not acquire an optional HK$20,000 deductible just because one parent has company insurance. [S3]
The older parent's premium is more than half this household total. That is a useful prompt to plan older-age affordability rather than looking only at children's low initial premiums.
If one parent has company cover
Compare an appropriate personal top-up with the existing company benefits. A Pink deductible may be useful where eligible company reimbursement offsets it, but the household needs to fund the remaining amount if the job ends.
For children or a non-working partner, a high deductible without other insurance or accessible savings can create a different problem. Decide per person rather than copying the working parent's choice. [S11]
Tax relief on the same budget
Assume one eligible taxpayer holds and pays these policies, all five insured people qualify under the relationship and identity rules, and all twelve payments fall in the same year of assessment.
The HK$8,544 grandparent premium is capped at HK$8,000 for that taxpayer. The other example premiums are below their individual caps. The total deduction would therefore be HK$15,488.
At an illustrative 17% rate applying to the entire deduction, the tax reduction would be HK$2,632.96. Your actual saving depends on the tax calculation, payment dates, qualifying-premium amount and any sharing arrangements. [S22] [S23]
The rules can allow a qualifying spouse to claim; do not assume only the policyholder can ever do so. Where siblings separately insure a parent, each taxpayer's cap can apply to their eligible claim. That does not mean overlapping medical cover is necessarily worth buying.
Review after a change
Revisit cover after a birth, job change, career break or retirement. Check dependant-cover dates and personal-policy terms before cancelling anything.
Keep a family file with policy schedules, personal endorsements, annual premium statements and who is responsible for each payment. It makes both claims and tax filing easier without treating every family member as having identical needs.
